Up and down the Texas Gulf Coast, from Brownsville to Pt. Arthur,
saltwater fishermen consider the Matagorda Bay Complex one of
the finest in the state when it comes to fishing for speclded trout,
redfish and flounder. The bay’s coastlines stretch for over 50 miles,
with Sargent at the eastern end of the bay system and Port O’Conner
at the West End. Located near the mouth of the Colorado River
between East and West Bay, the town of Matagorda draws anglers
from far and wide to enjoy the vast fishing opportunities the
Matagorda Bay complex offers. Palacios is at the northern end
of West Matagorda Bay and offers an excellent location to launch
a boat or to fish from the shore.
There are several boat ramps and bait camps in Palacios where
fishermen can access the vast grassy and shallow flats of West
or Tres Palacios Bay. More and more metropolitan Houston
anglers are discovering that the short two-hour drive places them
within a cast of the trophy fish that the Matagorda Bay system offers.
East Matagorda Bay is often described as the ‘best kept secret’ in Texas.
The small bay produces some of the most exciting trout fishing that f
ishermen may ever encounter. Catching trout under the birds in East
Bay is an annual fall ritual. East Bay is easily accessed from Matagorda
or Sargent.The vast grass flats of West Bay are enjoyed by both
boat and wade fishermen and consistently produce heavy stringers
of redfish and speckled trout. Reefs along the north and south shorelines
of West Bay provide endless opportunities for fishermen searching
for that elusive limit of trout or reds.
The Colorado River is considered to be the top winter fishing spot
along the Texas Gulf Coast.
Every year as northerns cool the shallow waters of the adjacent bays,
speckled trout and redfish seek out the warmer waters the Colorado
River offers. A 15-minute boat ride puts fishermen in the middle of
some of the best fishing in Texas. Offshore enthusiasts will find
excellent opportunities for snapper, dolphin, kingfish and ling, a
short run out of the Matagorda Jetties or from Sargent.
During the summer ‘blue water’ fisherman flock to Matagorda to
take advantage of uncrowded fishing grounds just offshore of
Matagorda.
Deep-water structure and production platforms provide plenty
of structure for offshore species to hide in and around and whether f
ishermen or trolling or fishing on bottom they’re sure to have
success when fishing offshore here.
